Hi!

Hi! My name is Sandy. I am a neurodivergent (ADHD/OCD, Neurodivergent) MSW Intern. I am also a middle school ELA (English Language Arts) teacher. Most of my experience is with depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, ADHD, OCD, ASD, and other issues that arise with students. I’ve worked with all school age children, as well as providing support to their caregivers. I hope to offer evening hours to help best fit the scheduling needs of busy families. As a neurodivergent teacher and therapist, I recognize the importance of having a positive and supportive environment to help navigate our place in the world around us, while focusing on the strengths we have to ensure success.

Clinical Therapist in Training

I have been working in the field of education since 2014, and spent many years as a preschool teacher while working through my Undergraduate Education degree at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). I also worked at my current school as a Multilingual Learner Interventionist, supporting many different types of students and needs, before accepting the current teaching position I am in. I have been a full classroom teacher since 2023.

I am making the switch to Social Work largely because both I and the students I teach struggle in an environment that overwhelmingly does not meet the needs of neurodivergent students or adults that work in the building. I firmly believe that every student is capable of success, but that learning needs to be a positive experience. I aim to use my experience as a teacher to help support the clients at Heartstone Guidance Center, with the intention of empowering clients to improve their educational experience. I hope to provide my clients with strengths-based support, while helping to identify systemic barriers and utilize trauma-informed care, to best support students and their families.
